Health
Revisted
by Lu Su
A few weeks
ago I expressed what I had thought was one of the best thing a
business owner could do for their business: Take care of one’s
own Health. The long term benefits are clear. As a small business
owner, we wear many hats. And it is no surprise that we make all
types of mistakes in our buying, marketing efforts, planning,
focus or lack of, etc… The point being is that the business
can often survive the many blunders we make, but often the business
will not survive if you are taken out of the picture.
I guess in
our journey through life here on earth, we learn either by personal
experience or by eyewitness accounts. Business owner and President
Brad
Pick shared his recent health ordeal with me. Click on his
name to read about Brad’s health wake up call. With the
wide abundance of food in our country, hopefully many of us will
choose to take the narrow path on this one. So take care of your
health. Is that it? It is definately something easier said than
done and a lifetimes worth of effort. Pat are you reading this,
stop smoking! But there has got to be more to it than just a healthy
body.
About a year
ago, I had the opportunity to talk to Jonathan Post a captain
in the US Army. He had already spent two tours of duty in Afghanistan
and one in Iraq. Many subjects came up. One subject was about
the physical health and well being of those soldiers under him.
Captain Post expressed that in terms of fitness, the great majority
of his soldiers are probably at their peak of physical strength
and very physical fit. Post remarked, “Your jaw would probably
hit the ground after you see how much weight many of his men can
bench press”. However, Post also mention that probably the
least healthy thing being done for his men was the generous donations
of free product by tobacco companies -in their effort to “support”
the troops. Post remarked, “There are just pallets and pallets
full of chewing tobacco available –as much as you want and
care to take. So how about some free lip cancer to take home as
a souvenir?”
Captain Post
expressed that a soldiers effectiveness is dependent on two main
factors: their physical health and emotional well-being; the later
being the more difficult for our arm forces to address. Post expressed
that numerous soldiers had troubled personal relationships to
begin with before departing the States. Many soldiers are in real
turmoil by the inordinate amounts of time they spend on the phone
or trying to reach people at very early hours of the day, while
they should be sleeping. Also their turmoil can be indirectly
seen by the number of broken receivers the US Army has needed
to replace. Unfortunately a number of our soldiers did not marry
responsible mates and now many are dealing with issues long distance
(i.e. their kids, unfaithfulness, spouse “spending all their
money”, etc..). Of course the “Dear John” letters
keep arriving too. So Captain Post expressed that his staff expends
considerable resources in trying to help them resolve issues at
home -so that they can have more effective soldier on the field.
There is something
to be learned here. I would dare to say that the second best thing
a small business owner can do, which will provide long term benefit
for their business, is to love your spouse. A
typical small business owner’s spouse is directly or indirectly
involved in the business. In almost all cases, their efforts allow
us to be a more effective in what we do. Moreover they contribute
considerably to our well-being and outlook on life.
I came across
an email that yet again seemed to belittle men in our simple mindedness.
But I found it humorous. After reading and reflecting on it for
a little while, I thought if we men could really do what the writer
suggests, it WOULD improve our relationship and thus improve our
effectiveness at work.
