Greetings!
Looking
at a weather map of the US, the entire country is colored
in shades of red. So it seems no matter where you are it
is either really hot or sweltering hot. I hope all of you
are finding ways to stay cool. I
want to thank all the many encouraging email responses giving
me encouragement to write on. Some gave topic suggestions.
Most gave appreciation responses -so thank you. I am not
use to getting encouragement; usually its just questions,
complaints, and the occasional "unsubscribe".
The
topic I like to address has to do with something dangerous
that often catches small business owners unaware, because
it stalks up very slowly. When it eventually pounces, it
causing great harm to both them and their business. What
is this mysterious danger? It is Your Health.
Many of us are so focused on taking care of our business
that we ms-prioritize something very important.
If you
are a small business owner, one of the best things you can
do for your business is to take care of yourself. Not rocket
science here, but I think it is important enough and worth
saying again. One of the best things you can do for your
business is to take care of yourself. I have witnessed time
after time that when the decision maker's health fails,
their business suffers greatly. Many of us know what we
should do: Eat right, sleep right, exercise and walk that
tight rope balancing work and family life. As I write this
I can see how hypocritical I am being as I yet again have
missed lunch, gulp down coffee for meals, and then fool
myself by saying, "I'll just catch his monologue and
then go to bed".
I see
this happen often, some business owners will spend a fortune
on a piece of property or plant equipment, software, or
advertisement; but skimp on something really important that
affects them every day. From my point of view, one of the
two best short term investments a small business owner can
make is 1) a good mattress and 2) a safe vehicle. No, I
will not bore you with the benefits of a good nights sleep,
but a few words on cars are in order -especially because
many of us market the diecast version of them. I do not
have any stats for you, but I know that the most dangerous
thing we do each day is get into our vehicle. We are most
likely to become physically injured while in a motorized
vehicle. I also know the next paragraph is going to go in
and out of my friend David's ear (he happens to own three
Harley's).
With
gas prices headed upwards, a good friend of mine was considering
one of those light weight and fuel efficient hybrid cars.
Without a doubt, his desire to save gas and pollute less
is a nobel. Understand that I am not trying to disparage
these light hybrid cars. If we could convince enough Americans
to stop driving gas guzzlers, our society would be a better
place. However, 2005 marks a very big shift in our culture's
driving habits. I believe that was that year in which the
average vehicle was no longer a passenger sedan (a car).
So the next accident you might get involved in means that
there is now a greater chance that you are going to get
hit by a tractor trailer, truck, van, mini van or suv than
a another car. The last time I checked, the laws of physics
particularly on momentum (mass x velocity) still apply.
I think a interesting questions to give a college student
would be: You have a 2.5 ton suv approaching you at 65 mph.
You are driving a car towards that suv at 55 mph. How large
does that air bag need to be for you to survive such an
impact?. Does large does the steering column have to be
to hold that air bag? Oh, I do have one statistic to share.
After polling 1000 male drivers, 90% of them think their
driving ability is better than the average male.
So enough
on short term investments. What about a good long term investment
for a small business owner? Answer: Eating right and exercise
(I am just full of knowledgeable answers am I not?). It
certainly does not help when we live in a culture where
food is so readily available. I remember traveling across
the country for a 10 minute meeting and I came to the realization
that access to food was available everywhere. I think the
longest I had to go without food was while I was waiting
in line for the car rental. It is both ironic and tragic
that when we look at the Roman civilization, we shake our
heads knowing that many poisoned themselves via lead pipes
and lead drinking vessels. How will future generations look
at us when they figure out what poisoned us? Peanut allergies
is something very new. Growing up, I did not have one friend
or acquaintance that had such an allergy; now it is very
commonplace in elementary schools. The number of cases of
Autism and Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorders should
also be a wake up call for us.
I see
that I have started to rant. I conclude with a few pictures
that should either make you laugh or cry. Again for what
it is worth, please take care of health. |
